TL;DR
You make money in GTA 6 by doing crimes in the open world. Confirmed Rockstar showed Edge magazine three ways so far: holding up gas stations, robbing jewelry stores, and stealing specific cars that fences want, listed in a phone app called WAINK. Some story missions won't start until Jason and Lucia raise enough cash, so you'll need these between jobs. We'll replace this with tested methods from November 19, when the game unlocks.

How do you make money in GTA 6?
Confirmed Edge writes that "Jason and Lucia will need to raise cash in order to secure the next job, which might involve holding up a gas station or jewellery store, or stealing a particular car wanted by a fence," calling these "just a handful of the ways in which players can earn money" (GamesRadar+ / Edge).
| Method | What we know | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Gas station holdup | Confirmed as a cash source | A shopper may "play the hero" |
| Jewelry store robbery | Confirmed as a cash source | Alarms and witnesses raise your Heat |
| Car theft for a fence | Pick a job in the WAINK app, deliver the car | High-end cars ping police; damage cuts your pay |
How does stealing cars for fences work?
Confirmed Jason and Lucia have a phone app called WAINK that lists car models wanted by fences, with "its security features, tracking capabilities and so on." Per Edge (GamesRadar+ / Edge):
- Better-protected cars are harder to steal.
- Higher-end models ping their location to the police, so you have to lose the tail on the way to the drop-off, where the fence usually has a signal blocker.
- Part of your payment depends on the car's condition when it arrives, so drive carefully.
Do you need money for story missions?
Confirmed Sometimes. Edge says there's "some natural gating to introduce pauses and downtime between missions," and raising cash is one of those gates (GamesRadar+ / Edge). Rockstar's Rob Nelson also said the game isn't only a power fantasy: Jason and Lucia "may want money, but they also want things from one another."
Tips before you rob anything
Confirmed From the same Rockstar demo:
- Park a getaway car nearby. In a robbery "you won't have time to phone in a vehicle," so leave one around the corner of the store you plan to rob.
- Watch your fuel. Every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine health readout.
- Break the police description after a job. Change clothes, drop the weapon and split up. See our wanted system guide.
- Your weapons live in your car's trunk, and the Scooter Bros app delivers your car for "a modest fee."
What isn't confirmed yet
- Stock market: GTA 5 had one in story mode; Rockstar hasn't mentioned one for GTA 6.
- Money cheat: none announced; GTA 5 never had one. See GTA 6 cheats.
- Payout amounts and the fastest early method: unknown until launch. We'll test and add them from November 19.
