TL;DR
GTA 6 police hunt you by what they know, not just by stars. Confirmed A Heat system tracks the police report on you: your description, clothes, weapon, whether CCTV caught you and whether you had a partner, shown as icons at the top of the screen. Change clothes, drop the weapon or split up and you match the report less. Police use K9 dogs, near-invisible stinger strips at night, and newer cars can carry trackers. Rockstar's Rob Nelson showed all of this to Edge magazine (October 29, 2026). Reported Wanted levels go up to six stars.

How does the GTA 6 wanted system work?
Confirmed Police chase what they know about you. In Edge issue 430, Rockstar North's Rob Nelson showed a Heat system that tracks the information police have gathered: "your physical description, whether you were working alone or with a partner, what you were wearing, whether CCTV captured you, what weapon you were carrying." Those details appear as icons at the top of the screen, "effectively showing the contents of the police report you are trying to outrun" (GamesRadar+ / Edge).
Reported A crime has to be witnessed or trip an alarm before police hear about it, and a hollow star means police are responding but don't know who did it (IGN). Wanted levels reportedly go up to six stars (GamesRadar+).
Confirmed Not every slip brings a chase. Rockstar told Edge the game "allows a degree of latitude before behaviour crosses the threshold into a wanted level." But people notice how you carry a weapon: a shotgun slung on your back is one thing, in your hands another. Crowds edge away or scatter, and some people may challenge you (GamesRadar+ / Edge).
How do you lose the cops in GTA 6?
Confirmed Make yourself harder to recognize. Per Edge's account of the demo (GamesRadar+ / Edge):
| What police know | How to remove it |
|---|---|
| Two suspects seen together | Split up from your partner |
| What you were wearing | Change your clothes |
| The weapon you used | Drop the weapon |
| The car you were in | Ditch it (newer cars may have a tracker) |
"Escape is no longer merely a matter of waiting for stars to evaporate, but a process of making yourself progressively less recognisable," Edge writes.
What do GTA 6 police use against you?
Confirmed All seen in Rob Nelson's 90-minute demo for Edge (GamesRadar+ / Edge):
- K9 units. After a motorcycle crash, a police Alsatian "closes the gap almost immediately and pins Jason to the ground."
- Stinger strips. Police radio ahead and lay them across the road; at speed at night they're "almost invisible." Hitting one blew the bike's front tire.
- Car trackers. "A newer, expensive car may contain a tracker that continues broadcasting your position," and owners may call in a report after you steal a car.
- Helicopters with searchlights, which you'll be hiding from in back alleys.
Confirmed Ordinary people are a risk too. Some drivers flee when you steal their car, others are armed and fight back, and a shopper may "play the hero" during a gas station holdup (GamesRadar+ / Edge).
Does the way you play change the story?
Confirmed Yes. A Criminal Profile tracks Jason and Lucia from "Professional" to "Irredeemable", shown with angel and devil icons. Incapacitating or intimidating instead of killing keeps you professional; shooting first builds a violent profile. Rockstar says the profile "will influence how Jason and Lucia's story unfolds" (GamesRadar+ / Edge).
How is this different from GTA 5?
- GTA 5: police mostly come once your stars go up, and you lose them by leaving the search area until the stars fade.
- GTA 6: Confirmed police build a description you can break, NPCs react to visible weapons, and dogs, trackers and spike strips make escapes harder. Rockstar says the aim is to make crime "feel precarious" rather than godlike (GamesRadar+ / Edge).
Reported Missions built on the wanted system behave the way it does in the open world, Rob Nelson told IGN, so a scripted car chase can turn into a normal police chase (GameRant).
